Award Winning DesignNovember 23, 2004
Kevin Wagstaff, AIA, along with Mary Cerrone, AIA have been awarded the AIA Pittsburgh 2004 Honor Award as well as the Columbia Gas People’s Choice Award for Hillside House, their family residence in the Shadyside neighborhood of Pittsburgh. This largely new house is a transformation of a former drab, two-bedroom, one-story ranch house that had a basement and a one-car integral garage. They tore down 85% of the structure and transformed the house to capture great views of the region, and opened up the site to a new garden in a wooded setting.

Another Winner!November 23, 2004
Mascaro Construction Company has received a 2004 Building Excellence Award from the Master Builder’s Association for the Courtyard by Marriott project in downtown Pittsburgh, designed by PWA. This 182-room hotel was created by the renovation of 3 long-neglected commercial sites into a new moderately priced hotel, adjacent to the David L. Lawrence Convention Center, and opened in March, 2004. The project qualified as Certified Historic Rehabilitation as contributing structures in the Penn-Liberty Historic District.

Improving the NeighborhoodNovember 23, 2004
PWA is pleased to announce a new project, the design of eleven new single-family residences in the city of McKeesport, PA for the McKeesport Housing Authority. This is the first phase of forty-five units that will offer affordable housing for low-income families. This infill housing will help to restore a blighted neighborhood and provide continuity with the nearby public housing community of Harrison Village that is also currently undergoing revitalization. Ten of the homes will be pre-manufactured modular construction and the eleventh unit, a fully accessible home, will be traditional "stick-built" construction.

New Condominium for SummersetOctober 12, 2004
Perfido Weiskopf Architects has begun the design of its second project at Summerset at Frick Park where the firm recently completed 40 rental townhouses. The new project is a 36-unit residential condominium opposite the mini park, which is at the center of the Phase I site plan. The new condominiums will include apartments ranging from 1200 to 1800 s.f., and each will have a solarium rather than a porch. The building will have three entrances and the elevators will be situated such that there will be no long corridors.

New Staff MemberOctober 12, 2004
We are pleased to announce that Julia Brooke Hustwit has joined the firm as an Intern Architect. She is a 2004 graduate of Carnegie Mellon University with a Bachelor of Humanities and Arts in Architecture and Environmental Policy and also attended the London School of Economics and Political Science.

A New Hotel ProjectAugust 18, 2004
PWA has been selected by Hospitality Lodging Investors, LP to design a new 4-story, 110-room hotel in Beckley, WV. This facility, based on a new prototype Holiday Inn product, will include a restaurant, meeting rooms, and an indoor pool. It is scheduled to be complete in fall, 2005. Prior projects with Hospitality Lodging Investors have included 3 Country Inn & Suites projects located in Gettysburg and York, PA, and Baltimore/Washington International Airport.

LEED Certifications for Three Staff MembersAugust 18, 2004
Perfido Weiskopf Architects is pleased to announce that Jan Held, AIA, Gerrod Winston and Steven Albert have received their LEED Accreditations from the U.S. Green Building Council and the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design program. The U.S. Green Building Council is the nation’s foremost coalition of leaders from across the building industry working to promote buildings that are environmentally responsible, profitable and healthy places to live and work.
