PCI Design AwardsJuly 15, 2008
West General Robinson Street Garage has been selected as a winner of the PCI (Precast/Prestressed Concrete Institute) Design Awards Program for Best Large Parking Structure (more than 1,000 vehicles). The project was designed by PWWG in a joint venture relationship with Walker Parking Consultants of Kalamazoo, MI. Mascaro Construction Co. was the General Contractor, Sidley Precast Group was the Precast Contractor and the Owner is the Sports & Exhibition Authority. The West General Robinson Street parking structure has a dual personality, serving two distinct markets from one location depending on the day. To meet all of these needs on a site ringed by infrastructure, designers used a total precast concrete system to create a double-thread helix ramp that coordinates with entrances on three streets.
The project creates a unique appearance to serve its varying needs-and those needs will be expanding in the future. An underground light-rail transit station is being constructed on the site, and the entrance will be integrated into the parking structure's main lobby. Provisions to extend the parking deck over the light-rail tunnel also have been included as demand necessitates expansion. Read more about the project in a special issue of Ascent Magazine, or the PCI Journal.

Building #3March 21, 2008
PWWG has been retained by the General Services Division of the State of West Virginia to design the comprehensive renovation of Building #3 (the DMV Building located on the Capitol Campus) in Charleston. The building, designed in the late 40's by Cass Gilbert Jr. is an art deco office building and has been deemed an eligible historic structure by the State Historic Preservation Office. PWWG's charge is to create 21st century office space for multiple government departments while retaining the character defining architectural features of the original building. The State has chosen to seek LEED certification, and it will be the first LEED certified building on the campus. Construction of the estimated $24 million project is expected to begin in late 2008.
MBA AwardsMarch 21, 2008
Mascaro Construction Co. and PWWG have been awarded a Master Builders' Association of Western Pennsylvania 2007 Building Excellence Award for the Pittsburgh Plumbers Local #27, selected as the Best Design/Build Project. The local's existing 6800 square foot building was expanded to the east and west and by adding a new second floor. The completed 17800 square foot facility almost triples the amount of former space and provides numerous enhancements for training purposes and member benefits. The contractor, owner and architect met regularly and worked collaboratively through the entire design and construction process, from the earliest design alternative to occupancy, fostering innovation in design and construction and meeting the Owner's needs efficiently. Project construction was completed in six months, two months ahead of schedule and under budget.
